The other day at work a woman I work with closely sent me an e-mail and stated she was thinking joining WoW, and had heard that I used to play. Her request was for my advice. The following is what I sent in response....
Oh my god. Seriously, playing WoW is a lifestyle not a game. I WISH I was kidding. I lost two years of my life to this game… Granted, I LOOOOOOVED every minute of it, but it is a huge time suck.
I chose to cancel my account right before school started simply because I have a total of 3 hours at home each day. That’s 30 minutes in the morning when I eat breakfast and have a cup of coffee, and 2 and ½ hours in the evening in which I must do my chores, homework, and my boyfriend. Sometimes because of the latter item on that list the 2 and ½ hours sometimes goes over schedule.
The following are tips for those about to join WoW:
- Say goodbye to your husband.
- Kiss your children goodbye.
- Realize that a lot of younger people play the game, and you will be subjected to a lot of annoying spamming, childish jokes, flames, and other internet annoyances. (Mostly in the cities…. I avoided the cities unless I NEEDED to go there for banking, etc.)
- Be aware that it is a video game. Be even more aware that other people think of it as their life and are offended when you remind them it is a video game. Try to find at least one of these people each time you log on and laugh at them.
- Think about how you could better spend $15 each month. If you are okay with spending this much money on a game, more power to you. One year will cost you $180, two years $360.
- Think about how many hours you might be playing this a day. During my serious WoW time I spent nearly 8+ hours each day playing the game. In a week that’s 56 hours, in a year that’s 2,290 hours.
- Consider your snack foods while playing WoW. I had to WoW “sessions”. The first year I played, I snacked on carrots and drank a ton of water. The second year I played I ate pizza and got drunk a lot. In the latter session I also gained 40 lbs. Something to consider.
- Play a mage. You won’t regret it. Be prepared to die…..a lot. You will die…a lot. Did I mention you will die? You will also be able to kill things faster than anything in the game, and you just look fucking awesome while you’re melting faces. Advantage mage: cloth armor is far cheaper to repair than leather or plate.
- Don’t listen to any mage advice from Mike S. He’s total noobsauce and recently was asking moi for mage advice.
- Try everything. Try the battlegrounds (PvP), try dungeons, and if you hit level 70 and stick with it try raiding and arena. Why? Because you will eventually get bored with the game, and realize that you’ve had your fill. It took me two years, but holy shit I loved every minute of it.
- Re-read this list, shake your head, and think that I am making too big of a deal about this.
- Know that I am not.
All those aside just remember to have fun. It’s a video game after all.
